Guatemala closed 2021 with 19.2% less cocaine seizures

The Subdirectorate General for Anti-Drug Analysis and Information (SGAIA) of the PNC detailed that last year 11,011 kilos of cocaine were seized, 2,617 kilos less (19.2%) than the 13,628 that were seized in the Central American country during 2020.

The seizure of cocaine in 2020, during the first year of the government of President Alejandro Giammattei, was also lower by 28.28% than the seizures recorded in 2019.

According to the SGAIA report, in addition to cocaine in 2021, more than 21.52 million poppy bushes were eradicated from whose bulb raw opium is extracted, some 3.33 million marijuana plants and 1.76 million coca bushes were destroyed.

In addition, 14 kilos of methamphetamine, 9 of crack, 2,238 of processed marijuana were seized, as well as 23 barrels and 3 plastic containers with synthetic drugs.

Added to this are 374 vehicles, 7 boats, 286 firearms, more than 12 thousand ammunition of different caliber, and US $ 1.7 million in cash.

In 2021, Guatemala broke a record by capturing 57 people requested in extradition for drug trafficking crimes by the United States justice.

According to official statistics, in 2020 the Central American country captured 15 people, in 2019 there were 21 in total detainees, while in 2018 they arrested 8 people, in 2017 there were 21 and in 2016 the figure rose to 14.

Guatemala is used because of its geographical position as a bridge for the transfer of narcotics from South America to the United States, according to the vision of experts on the subject, who also consider that 90 percent of the drugs that reach the United States pass for the Central American nation.

In 2019, the security forces seized more than 19 thousand kilos of cocaine, the highest amount in history, above the 16 thousand 829 of 2018 and the 13 thousand 600 of 2017, according to official data from the Ministry of the Interior.
