They cancel the first procession of 2022, of the Virgen de la Pólvora, to avoid coronavirus infections

Authorities of the Expiatory Shrine to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Don Bosco, reported that due to recommendations from the Ministry of Health, the procession they had scheduled for January 1, 2022, was canceled.

In a statement on social networks, it was reported that the processional procession of the Immaculate Conception, known as Virgen de la Pólvora, will no longer go out onto the streets and will take place within the walls.

“We ask that you refer to the gunpowder committee so that you can assign the respective time of your shift for the gunpowder offering,” it was detailed in the publication.

In recent days, the authorities of the Ministry of Health have indicated that the positivity and cases of coronavirus detected daily increased, so they suspect that the omicron variant is already in the country.

However, the results of the samples to corroborate whether the strain is the cause of the cases have not yet been received.

Edwin Asturias, former head of the Presidential Commission for Attention to the Emergency of Covid-19 (Coprecovid) said on December 30 that the increase in cases in the central plateau went from 2-3% positivity to 10% in a week, despite the high percentage of adults who are vaccinated.

According to the epidemiologist, to stop the advance of the omicron variant, an “aggressive” vaccination with three doses will be necessary.

While it is known if the omicron variant is already in the country, some Internet users have criticized the decision of the Ministry of Health to allow some activities and prohibit or endorse others.

Last November, the Archdiocese of Guatemala reported that for Lent and Holy Week 2022 processional processions would be allowed, but stressed that parishioners and brotherhoods must meet certain requirements.

The most important requirement to participate in the activities is to be vaccinated with the complete scheme, as indicated on that occasion by Gonzalo de Villa, metropolitan archbishop.

It was added that the authorization of activities will be conditional on the situation in the country due to the disease and what the Ministry of Health establishes.
