An armed attack perpetrated on the afternoon of December 31 claimed the life of the former mayor of San Andrés Itzapa, Chimaltenango, Hugo Guch, according to lifeguards from the Departmental Municipal firefighters.
The incident occurred in a subdivision that was owned by him in the San Cristóbal canton, within the urban area of the municipality. As he regularly did, Guch was under an awning where he received clients who inquired about the land he was selling.
So far the Public Ministry and the National Civil Police have not revealed more details of the armed incident. The experts have located four bullet casings.
The body of Guch, mayor of San Andrés Itzapa from 2016 to 2020 elected by the National Unit of Hope (UNE) party, was recognized by relatives who arrived at the scene of the crime.
A neighbor who did not identify himself lamented the fact and said that during his tenure as mayor, Guch had done a lot of social work, even after leaving office.
“At this time of the pandemic, Hugo, helped several people with limited resources a lot and even supported people who lost relatives due to covid, may God help the family in their pain.”
Homicidal violence appears to have taken hold this year, after the release of restrictions imposed last year to contain the pandemic.
A report by the organization Dialogues prepared with official data until last September, revealed that this year the monthly average of homicides is 228, compared to 214 in 2021.
