The highest risk judge Erika Aifán declared the reservation in a criminal hearing where journalist Juan Luis Font and Alejandro Sinibaldi, former Minister of Communications, appeared on charges of corruption.
The former official declared to the tax agents that Font received a bribe for not criticizing him during the journalistic exercise, money that would have been paid with part of Sinibaldi’s alleged illicit earnings.
The Association of Journalists of Guatemala (APG) and the organization Red Rompe El Miedo issued a statement, in which they classify the legal actions against the communicator as retaliation for his journalistic practice.
At the hearing on Tuesday, it is not ruled out that Sinibaldi will reissue before the judge, prosecutors and Font himself his version regarding the payment of a bribe to be favored in the information spaces in charge of the journalist.
Due to the fact that Sinibaldi appears in more than a single judicial file, the judge considered it prudent, after the request of the Public Ministry (MP), to decree the reservation of the case to prevent details of other cases from coming to light and affecting the ongoing investigations.
They criticized the roots
Part of the pronouncements also refer to a precautionary measure that Font has had since last December 6, it is a rooting order, which prevents him from leaving the country until the investigation process evolves.
Some unions in favor of the journalist described the precautionary measure against him as unfair because it was issued before being linked to the process, but this type of legal resolution is frequent in court tower.
It is a preventive measure to prevent a suspicious person from leaving the country while the investigation process progresses, these are strategies that have been applied against former officials, politicians and businessmen.
The Association of Journalists of Guatemala (APG) and the organization Red Rompe El Miedo warn that in the coming days other types of measures could be seen against Font, where they even mention that the request for an arrest warrant is being considered.
