Citizen Manual: How to pay the vehicle traffic tax

The end of the year parties, gifts and family time occupy the minds of many Guatemalans, but there is something important that must not be forgotten and that it is advisable to do in the first months of the year.

It is about the payment of the Vehicle Circulation Tax, which must be made from January 1 to July 31 of each year. Although the window to be able to do it is six months, the authorities recommend doing it in the first days of the year to avoid inconveniences, if the owner of the vehicle goes beyond the stipulated date, he must also pay the fines for omission and interest.

“For late payment, a penalty of 100% will be applied, but if it is paid without being required, the fine will be reduced by 75%”, indicates the portal of the Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT).

This payment is stipulated in the Law of Taxes on the Circulation of Vehicles, Land, Maritime and Air Decree 70-94 and serves, according to theory, so that the Traffic Department can have specific funds that allow it to obtain and maintain traffic lights, signals traffic and road markings.

On November 30 in the Central American newspaper, the SAT published the board agreement 11-2021 that approves the table of taxable values of the Tax on the Circulation of Land Vehicles that will be in force from January 1 to December 31, 2022. It you can check here.
