The Minister of Public Health, Francisco Coma, represents Guatemala in the extraordinary session held by the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.
Coma in his speech thanked the donor countries that have sent vaccines to Guatemala to face the covid-19 pandemic.
The Guatemalan official explained that the objective of the session will be to examine the advantages of creating an agreement, agreement or other international instrument on preparing for and responding to pandemics.
He stressed that the greatest challenge in Guatemala has been the challenge of the behavior of the population in the face of restrictive measures, and pointed out that the country does not escape the economic crisis generated by the coronavirus.
He added that overcoming the pandemic will require more investment and recovery-oriented policies.
He affirmed that Guatemala supports the strengthening to implement new norms and specific actions for access to vaccines, new medicines, diagnostic tests, technology and training and protection of health personnel who are the main actor in the fight against the pandemic.
He highlighted the importance of a relevant, inclusive and effective instrument that solutions in an impact for health emergencies.
He indicated that it is essential to identify the substantive elements that could be included in an instrument and determine its nature among the options that are contemplated in the constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“The generosity of the donor countries is appreciated, which to a great extent have made possible the advancement of vaccination against covid-19 in Guatemala,” Coma said.
He said there is still a long way to go and challenges to face, such as the recent discovery of the new omicron variant that has begun to affect Africa, Europe “and surely the rest of the world shortly.”
He stressed that it is necessary to strengthen capacities to prepare and respond to pandemics at the national, regional and global levels to have an impact on the quality of life of the population.
He said that they should be focused on the original precepts of the international health regulations, so they give priority to their compliance and strengthening.

Coma is vice president of the World Health Assembly and represented the countries of the Americas in the plenary session in 2021, which will conclude on December 3.

The main function of the World Health Assembly is to determine WHO policies, appoint the Director-General, and oversee financial policies. Also review and adopt the proposed budget program, among others.
